THE GREAT PERUVANAM MAHADEVA TEMPLE, THRISSUR

Peruvanam Mahadeva temple is situated in Peruvanam of Thrissur district which is famous for festivals.  The deity of the temple Lord Shiva is faced towards west and Goddess Parvathy Devi is faced towards east.  The temple is brilliant for its architecture and carving works which were done during the 17th century and it is having a very peaceful environment.

It is one among the 32 temples of Parashurama.  It is believed that Peruvanam Mahadeva temple was originated at the same time of Kerala’s origin and it is a very ancient temple.  Peruvanam Mahadeva temple shows the vastness of hindu traditions and believes.  This is a temple that must be visited by people who loves historical and architectural works with ancient beauty.  Due to its structural and sculptural significance, it is protected and preserved by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

The temple is built in an area of 7 acres and it is having a great foregone beauty. Another fact which interests us is the small temple situated on top of the main temple and we can reach there using stairs which are made up of rocks, built inside the temple.



History of Peruvanam Mahadeva Temple

Saint Parashurama established 64 gramas after reclaiming Kerala , Peruvanam was the most important among that gramas.  The temple was constructed by “Pooru Maharshi” after propitiating Lord Shiva and the name of the place were known as Pooruvanam at that time.  Later it was called Peruvanam.

Further, it was believed that a large beautiful Shiva linga, which has been found in a lake was brought into this place.  At that time it got stuck in the branch of a tree and the present Madathilappan temple was built there.  Lord Shiva with dual lingas is the main speciality of Peruvanam Mahadeva temple.  So, the Lord is called Irattayappan.

The Peruvanam Mahadeva temple is very famous for its pooram with Pandi and Panchari melam which is a visual treat with an outstanding and incredible view.

It gives us a great ambience, bright and cheerful feelings.  Similar to Shri.Vadakkumnathan Temple, the deity of the temple does not participate in the pooram.  Many temples participate in this pooram.  The melam of the Urakam Devi and Cherpu Bhagavathy are considered as the best performed.  The Peruvanam Pooram is held during the time of Maha Shivarathri.

Thrissur Pooram is the largest and the most prominent traditional festival of kerala. It is believed to be a marvelous assembly of Gods and Goddesses, which is held at Thekkinkadu maithanam where Sree Vadakkumnathan temple is situated.   The idea of Thrissur Pooram was brought up by the great Raja Rama Varma, famously known as Shakthan Thamburan who was the Maharaja of Cochin.
