The great, Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is located in Taliparamba,  at a distance of 25 km from the town of Kannur, in Kerala.  Lord Shiva is the deity of the temple known as Rajarajeswara which means the Emperors of Emperors. It is one of the 108 Shiva temples  which was the contribution of Sree Parashurama.   Devotees calls Lord Shiva of this temple in other names like Perumchellurappan, Perumthrikovilappan, and Thampuran 

Perumthrikovilappan.  One of the speciality of Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is its Shikhara which is tallest among all the temples and its beautiful quadrangular sanctum with lots of brilliant architectural works which signifies uniqueness of the temple.

The story behind Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is that, there were three Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. A Saint Maandhatha   started praying Lord Shiva by means of Thapass.  Lord Shiva got pleased with his prayer and presented him a Shiva Linga and told him that it should be placed in an area where there is no burial ground.


                    After searching many areas, he found Taliparamba as the right destination to place the Shiva Linga.  After placing it, the Linga got dissolved in Earth. Similarly, the second Linga was given to Muchkunda and he found the same place as the right destination and here too the Linga got dissolved and became more powerful. Then the third Linga was given to Shathasoman. He was also attracted to the same place Taliparamba and placed the Linga there. After all, three installations, it became more powerful which results in the origination of Sree Rajarajeswara temple.

          During the last stage of the renovation works of the temple, Agastya Muni appeared and lit the Ghee Lamp which still remains as the shining beauty and devotees continues these rituals by offering ghee for the lamp.  



   The Namaskara of Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is 12 and half times.  Its because, during the ancient times one of the sage appeared and lit a ghee lamp and done Namasakara’s for 12 times.  While he was going to take the 13th one, the Linga got fixed there and this was the reason behind it.

                   Lord Shiva in Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is in the form of a Jyotirlinga which differentiates the temple as unique and it is three times more powerful than any other Shiva Temples. The Lord in this temple is having certain powers and specialties, is any problem is encountered in South Indian temples, the final solution is seen in Sree Rajarajeswara temple by means of Prashna, which is a part of Astrology.   Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is one among the Dwadasa Shivalayas which means 12 Shiva Temples. These temples are among the 108 Shiva temples by Parashurama.







One of the main speciality of Taliparamba Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is that, it is the only temple where women are allowed at night.  While men are allowed to enter the shrine during the daytime, meanwhile, women are not allowed at the same, they can enter the sanctum only after the Athazha Pooja.  It’s  because, at this time Lord Shiva is pleased and calm minded, accompanied with Sri Parvathi Devi. So, this time is believed as the best time for women to have worship.  Special puja offered in this temple is "Ponninkudam" for family prosperity.


The temple opens for worship at morning 4.00 am to 12.00 pm and opens at 5.00 pm in the evening and closes at 8.30 pm. Children below 5 years are not allowed inside this temple. All are unique customs of Sree Rajarajeswara Temple. 





 Earlier, the entire  Kerala was divided as temple states with gramas and villages as the administrative. All these temple states were under the 18 Tali temples and Sri Rajarajeswara temple was one among the Tali temples. The villages were known as Talis and the administrator officer is called, Taliatiri.

                  Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is unique for its architectural beauty.   There is a quadrangular sanctum which has a two-tiered pyramidal roof. Namaskara Mandapam is situated in front of the sanctum. It is believed that Sree Rama during his victorious return from Lanka stopped here to offer worship to Lord Shiva. In honor of his presence, devotees are not allowed into the Namaskara Mandapam even today.

It is said that the Rajarajeswara Temple had two ancient and large seven-storeyed Gopurams that were destroyed by Tipu Sultan in the late 18th Century. However, the relics of these Gopurams are still seen today lying all around the Eastern and Western entrances in the form of debris synonyms. The bases also still remain, and from their imposing appearance and intricate sculptures.

       There is no flagstaff in Sree Rajarajeswara temple like other temples. There is a small rectangular building in front of the Balikallu which is seen as unique compared to other temples. The Balikallu in Sree Rajarajeswara Temple has no roofs.  

      Taliparamba Sree Rajarajeswara Temple is one of the most tourist place of Kannur.  It is surrounded by beautiful green hills and curved pathways.  Taliparamba village is famous for its aromatic spices among all other places in South Indian destinations.

Thrissur Pooram is the largest and the most prominent traditional festival of kerala.
