Kerala Kalamandalam, the deemed to be university of Art and culture by the government of India, is a major place for learning classical arts performed by the south Indian region of Kerala. It is located in the northern side of Thrissur in a small beautiful village Cheruthuruthi near the banks of river Bharathapuzha. Today, Kalamandalam is the foremost proponent of variety of traditional arts. The History of Kerala Kalamandalam, Thrissur

                                      
Kerala was facing threat to extinction in their arts and culture due to the various colonial movements. Kerala kalamandalam founded in 1930, by the famous poet, Padmabooshan Vallathol Narayana Menon. Then, at the 20th century, the inception of kerala Kalamandalam gave rise to the three dance forms such as kathakali, Mohiniyattam and Koodiyattam.  They solicited donations from the public and conducted a lottery in order to raise funds for this society. It was inaugurated in November 1930 at kunnamkulam and was later shifted to the village Cheruthurithi, Thrissur in 1933. The land and building were donated by Cochin Maharaja. 


Afterwards, a dance department was started to revive Mohiniyattam.  First, Kerala Kalamandalam has been functioning as a grand in- aid institution under the cultural fair department, Government of kerala.  Later UNESCO has sanctioned substantial financial support to Kalamandalam in 2004, for the preservation and promotion of Koodiyattam. 
Then at 2005, UGC has granted the approval and Kalamandalam is now known as, Kalamandalam Deemed to be university of Art and culture. 
Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister to visit kalamandalam for the silver Jubilee award distribution. Then later, Indira Gandhi, V.P Singh, Manmohan Singh also visited kalamandalam.

      

Bachelor of arts in 14 different Art forms. The kerala Kalamandalam University offers: - VIII-X (3 Year) arts high school, XI-XII plus two, three-year full-time undergraduate degree in different streams and two-year full time post graduate course in the Master of arts for the same streams. Kerala Kalamandalam, also offers doctorate integrated with the master of philosophy and doctor of philosophy. (M.Phil.- PhD) 
The various courses are Kathakali, Mohiyattam, Koodiyattam, Bharatanatyam, Chenda, Thullal, Kuchipudi, Nagair koothu, the traditional orchestra panchavadhyam. Then, for other instrumental courses like, Chenda, Maddhalam, Mizhavu. Kerala kalamandalam was based on the study through Gurukulam Sampradayam which is ancient practice of residential learning where students stayed with their teachers. It teaches the complete expressions and postures for all forms of dances mainly for kathakali and mohiniyattam. 


In the world, Kalamandalam is the unique place of excellence in arts, beauty and culture that maintains the ancient methodologies. Koothambalam or Natyagriha is a part of Kerala's temple-heritage. The traditional Koothambalams were built in accordance with the principles of Natyashastra, the ancient Indian dramaturgy of sage Bharata. The pillars of the Natyagriha are made of granite. The roof, the stage-floor and its pillars are made of teak-wood and rose-wood. On the granite pillars, there is one hundred and eight karanas (dance-poses) dealt within the Natyashastra. Koothu and Koodiyattam were performed at the Koothambalam. In the architecturally exquisite Koothambalam, there will be variety of programs on special occasions. Watching recitals at the Koothambalam is a delightful experience.

The visiting time of Kalamandalam


The tour is available in all working days from 9 am to 1 pm. It takes about 3-4 hours for tour. It will be closed in all public and national holidays.The tours accept only 30 people per day and they explain about the entire traditions and culture. So, it is better to book the slots early as possible.          


Kerala Kalamandalam, the extreme art training school is located along Thrissur Shorunur Highway in a small village called Cheruthuruthi along the banks of Nila (Bharatapuzha) river in Thrissur district. From Thrissur town, Kalamandalam is 32 kms to the North. Shorunur Junction, a major Railway-station is only three kms away from Kalamandalam.
